The largest single roof-mounted solar panel installation in Stockholm is now being put into operation on the Tomteboda property. 1,465 solar panels have been installed on a roof area of approximately 4,000 square meters, which will generate approximately 400,000 renewable kilowatt-hours per year.

Tomteboda, co-owned by Areim and Blackstone and managed by Obligo Real Estate, has undergone extensive renovation and modernisation in recent years. The solar panel system is one step towards making the property as sustainable as possible.

– With this large-scale solar panel installation, we want to prove that it is possible to both produce renewable energy and at the same time make it economically defensible. As a leading real estate company, we have set ambitious targets to reduce our climate impact. Our aim is to be carbon net-zero by 2030, and if we are to succeed, we must act now. We want to inspire both citizens, other property owners, and the city by showing the possibilities and benefits of installing solar panels on a landmark property like Tomteboda. We operate in an industry that has a great environmental impact and we have a great responsibility, says Jerker Victor, property developer at Areim.

Planning, investigations and building permit applications began in the autumn of 2019 and the solar panel installation was finally inspected and approved in April 2021.

– We are happy and proud that the system is now operating, and that we can contribute to the export of renewable energy through the surplus that is produced, says Jerker Victor.

Save by Solar, responsible for the installation, began their work in the summer of 2020.

– The project has been completed without any major surprises and obstacles, which of course is a combination of good planning and coordination between different parties. As far as we know, this will be Stockholm’s largest facility on one single roof, says Carl-Johan Fredman, Sales and Marketing Manager at Save by Solar.

During a normal year, the system will produce approximately 400,000 kilowatt-hours. This corresponds to an average annual consumption for ca 80 villas, the energy used to brew 16.4 million cups of coffee or to have a 40-watt lightbulb lit for 1,200 years.

In addition to the solar cell installation, several other modernisations have been made in and around the property, for instance, general and environmental lighting. A modern bicycle garage with charging for electric bicycles, a service station, and a laundry facility has been built, as well as a top-equipped gym with an associated yoga studio and changing room. Pedestrian and bicycle paths to
and from the property are also being reviewed – in collaboration with the City of Solna -strengthening accessibility and security in the area.
